The political parties’ interests should not interfere with the opposition’s uniting.

Chairman of the Belarusian Social-Democratic party (People’s Assembly) Mikalai Statkevich is summoning the Belarusian National Congress at 12 a.m. on May 15. The organizers count upon the premises for 500-600 people. Today, Statkevich is waiting for the official decision of Minsk city executive committee – probably, they will allow to hold the Congress at some other conference hall, or maybe not.

“Of course we hope there will be the venue, but we are also prepared for another variant, - Statkevich has told to Radio Svaboda. – The Congress starts at 12 a.m. on May 15 in Minsk – this is the only thing I can say for sure. If there are no premises, we will hold the Congress in the open air. But it must happen. And it will happen.”

The Congress itself, in Statkevich’s opinion, should become a start for uniting of the democratic forces of Belarus. The Congress will not destroy parties, it should become a post-partisan formation. The Council of the Congress includes the first leader of the independent Belarus, four presidential candidates of different times, and five former prisoners of conscience.

Mikalai Statkevich is convinced that the number of delegates will be sufficient so that the Congress would become a mass and significant event. Delegates can be nominated from gatherings, by collecting signatures or by the quotes which will be defined in the nearest days. Alongside with that, there will be seats in the Council of the Congress, reserved for the participants of various political parties and movements who haven’t yet joined the Congress but may do it in the future. The Congress documents are already available for discussion. Statkevich says the documents have not caused any disputes by now.

We remind, the democratic activists of Homel supported the Belarusian National Congress yesterday.
