High Price of Lukashenka's Joke

A week ago the dictator told about banana gardens and on June 14 Russia has announced ban on import of products from Africa through Belarus.

A week ago Lukashenka told about banana gardens ready to be financed by the Russian president and then the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance introduced ban on some products from some countries of Africa through the EU and Belarus.

Since this Saturday all quarantined products from Cameroon, Sierra Leone, and Congo, as well as pears, apples, strawberries, tomatoes, mushrooms from Côte D'Ivoire, Benin, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and Burkina Faso can be imported only directly through checkpoints on the Russian border.

Such measures are introduced to prevent Russia from sanction goods posing as products from Africa. The Russian department suspects certificates provided by Belarus can be doubtful and information about import of African production to countries of the EU is absent at all and it is impossible to trace its route.

— This decision is taken by the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance on an ex parte basis, director of the department Alexander Piskun said.

It should be reminded that at the IIId Forum of Regions Vladimir Putin declared the desire to buy Belarusian apples, not sanction ones, Salidarnasts writes.

- Current situation should be used to expand production, inter alia, to needs of the Russian market. If it is not done today, it would be more complex for Belarusian producers to tap the Russian market. We want Belarus to supply apples and other agricultural products, meat, milk without any transit through its territory, Vladimir Putin said.

At that meeting press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov complained about a "transit problem of exotic fruits through Belarus":

- A check found out that some fruits did not grow in such African country. They do not exist there, the Kremlin's bureaucrat said meaning... apples.

Lukashenka's response was as follows:

–I will unveil a small secret. In a private meeting Putin said: let us finance gardens in Belarus. If you have an opportunity then let you agrarians grow apples and other fruits including bananas and then sell it to Russia. I support this position.

Afterwards Putin's press secretary refuted Lukashenka's words.

- It was a joke for a joke, Dmitry Peskov said without giving specifics.

As you can see Lukashenka's joke turned into the ban for sanction products.
