Mikalai Statkevich:” Square” After “Elections” Is Prerequisite Of Opposition Union

The unity of the opposition in the “parliamentary campaign” will be based on two principles: the European values and carrying out a rally against fraud.

One of the opposition leaders, former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich told that in his interview to charter97.org.

– You have repeatedly talked about the necessity of a single list of democratic candidates for the “elections.“ At what stage will the process of opposition forces unification in the framework of the “parliamentary campaign” start?

– Negotiations are underway within the framework of the Advisory Board of the democratic institutions. We have already come to the conclusion of a final agreement on a unified strategy for the “elections.” A meeting of the Advisory Board is just about to start, where we will come to an agreement on coordination of our activities at the “elections.”

The agreement includes a paragraph on holding protests after the “elections.” It has been offered by the Belarusian National Congress. Moreover, the adoption of such statement – on carrying out a protest rally by all means – was the main condition of the Congress, without which we would not have signed this agreement.

Without the finishing protest rally one even cannot plan to take part in the “elections.” After all, a self-respecting man should be able to respond to an insult. And to write 5% of the votes for the opposition at the “elections” – this is an insult from behalf of the authorities.

As for the single list of democratic candidates, here we are consulting in a variety of formats. In addition to the Advisory Council there are other formats, for example, holding consultations between the Belarusian National Congress and the center-right coalition.

I believe that the basis of the opposition unification should be a value approach, based on the European vector of Belarus. Now it is not the time, when we can afford to unite with those, who concede the “Eurasian” vector of development. After the war in Ukraine, it is obvious that such “vector” is a threat to the very existence of the Belarusian state.

You can sacrifice some ambition, but one has to be left untouched: the opposition must unite on the basis of European values.
