BPF: Lukashenka's Attempt to Hide Behind "Nationwide Assembly" Is Miserable

June Sojm of the BNF Party accepted a political statement about convocation of a so-called "All-Belarusian Assembly".

The political statement of the BNF Party says that the Belarusians need real parliament, but not the imitation of the "nationwide assembly".

20 years ago Lukashenka was seeking the way to legitimize abolition of real parliamentary government in Belarus with this unconstitutional organ. Later this assembly happened three times as a pre-election show called to demonstrate nationwide support on the eve of the regular presidential "election".

But in 2015 during the regular presidential "election" this "assembly" was not held. The reason is obvious: none of financial and economic indicators adopted in 2010 were carried out. The bankruptcy of the Russia-oriented authoritarian economic model is obvious even for its initiators who are trying to put their blame on the Belarusian people using "All-Belarusian Assembly".

The BPF party states the so-called "All-Belarusian Assembly" cannot be declared legitimate reflection of will of the Belarusian people. This body also is not able to fulfill the task of national consolidation in the face of relevant geopolitical challenges that our country faces.

"Instead of "false" people's assembly the Belarusians need real institutions: the parliament based on free and democratic elections where different visions of development of the country and different political trends embodied in political parties, the government liable to the parliament, the real rule of law which acts in conditions of division of branches of the government, implementation of principles of legality, and human rights are represented", the statement says.

The BPF Party is convinced that the only legitimate way for the society to express its will is free and democratic elections: "free and fair elections complying to the Belarusian legislation and equal conditions of all candidates will mean the return of true parliamentary government and people's power to Belarus."
