Lieutenant-General Shamanov: "Our Soldiers Are Constant Guests in Belarus"
Vladimir Shamanov

Commander of Russian Airborne Forces troops, Lieutenant-General Vladimir Shamanov visited Brest fortress on 22 June.

Journalist of Vechenniy Brest asked him a few questions:

- Please, share your impressions about Brest.

- I am really impressed. Every meter here makes you come back to those tragic and heroic times in the beginning of the war. The Great Victory would not be possible but for those times.

- Does the Brest fortress mean something special to you?

- Speaking frankly, I made preparations to go there. On the eve I read historical memoirs, watched Brest Fortress. And after walking around the place where every meter of it is soaked with great history you couldn't help but feel yourself a part of it. You try to put yourself in their shoes. And then you find out that there is a long way for us to pass the victory torch to new generations. It cannot be forgotten, we cannot allow us to present like Ivans not remembering our relations. We see now the more time comes after those heroic times, the more people want to rewrite the history. We will not allow it.

- What do you think about cooperation of Russian and Belarusian, in particular Brest airborne troops?

- Such assessment is provided at the highest level. The cooperation is recognized as an effective and successful. Belarusian - Brest - paratroopers take an active participation in military exercises in Russia. For instance, last year and this year they visited the North Pole. Our soldiers are constant guests in Belarus and Brest as well. Last year we held 26 joint events, this year 38 of them are scheduled. This is the specific level of our relations.

- Does it mean that the military advances of NATO eastwards are not threatening?

- NATO's military advance is impossible because of unshakable cohesion between Russians and Belarusians. And it will remain.
