Pensioners Who Planned To Picket In Minsk, Detained In Babrujsk

On Freedom Square in Minsk the activists planned to hold a picket against lawlessness in courts and prosecutor offices.

Pensioners Valiantsina and Aliaksandr Kavalenka were detained by policemen in Babrujsk at 5 a.m. Valiantsina Kavalenka is one of the activists of the initiative “Against Lawlessness in Prosecutor’s Offices And Courts,” Radio Svaboda reports.

The coordinator of the initiative “Against Lawlessness in Prosecutor’s Offices And Courts” Tamara Siarhei was detained in Minsk in the morning. 10 men in sportswear were waiting for her in front of her house. The detention happened when the woman was on the way to Freedom Square in Minsk to participate in the picket.

Valiantsina Kavalenka headed to the same picket. Her husband, Aliaksandr Kavalenka, in his car was giving her a lift to a shuttle bus to Minsk. However, traffic policemen stopped the pensioners near their house and demanded them to go to the district police department.

As the head of the prevention work and public order directorate of the district police department Siarhei Rudzko, the pensioners had been detained after violation of Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code, a repeated holding an unsanctioned rally.

Today morning one more Babrujsk activist Liubou Sankevich was visited by policemen at her place. They also demanded to follow them to the police department. However the woman didn’t open the door and refused to go anywhere.

The initiative “Against Lawlessness In Prosecutor’s Offices and Courts” is a group of people who for many years have been fruitlessly trying to redeem their rights at courts of all levels. The activists of this initiative tried to be received by the heads of the presidential administration for more than 30 times. In protest they held several pickets in Freedom Square in Minsk, and were convicted and fined for that.
