Fighters of the tactical group “Belarus” are in no haste to receive Ukrainian military cards in order to maintain “a freedom of manoeuvre.”

Now military service record cards are given to Belarusian volunteers in Donbas.

“Now we will defend Ukraine officially,” – the tactical group Belarus has written on Facebook. Its volunteers are fighting in Donbas on the Ukrainian side, but not as a part of Ukrainian military forces.

“Changes of the laws give opportunity for foreigners to do military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine officially, – Radio Svaboda was told by a fighter of the tactical group “Belarus” Jakub Khmara. – We have decided to test opportunities of doing contract military service in the Ukrainian army. A military card gives all rights which a Ukrainian military has: salary, medical care, social security. At the same time it could serve as a residence permit until the contract is over.”

At the moment only one fighter of the tactical group has received a Ukrainian military card and started service.

“If there is a necessity, – Khmara says, – others are to have a contract with the official army as well. But as long as there is an opportunity to fight like before, as volunteers, the majority is to stay volunteers.”

According to him, an official service has a number of advantages, but also “imposes certain limitations,” while volunteers still have “freedom of manoeuvre.”

“There is a great threat that a Crimean or Donbas scenario could be repeated in Belarus, we are getting ready for that and keep mobility, – Jakub Khmara added. – We know that in case of a danger Ukrainian volunteers are to help us, but the Belarusian people are to defend their independence themselves. We understand that solving the problem of our independence is linked to Ukraine now.”
