Serious Accident At Grodno-Azot: Two Dead

Two persons have died after a fatal poisoning by vapours, two more have been hospitalized.

Today at the noon a huge cloud of vapour raised over the territory of AZOT chemical plant. Alarming information spread in social networks: the Ministry of Emergency Response’s rescue workers from all parts of Hrodna and ambulance cars started to move in the direction of the plant.

As autogrodno.by was said by some sources from AZOT plant, there are no issues for concern. Hydroxyl ignited during the technical process. Sometimes such accidents happen as a result of a random spark when hydroxyl is unloaded from low-sided cars. Such accidental fire outbreaks are extinguished quickly, and the same happened in this case.

The plant continues functioning as normal.

According to another official report from AZOT plant, inflammation of hydroxyl occurred in one of the shops. But the ignition was put out quickly.

Two persons died of vapour intoxication, two more were hospitalized.

The press-service of the Ministry for Emergency Situations conformed reports about smoke spread in one of the shops of Grodno Azot.

According to preliminary information, a spark kindled hydroxylamine sulphate while hot works operations were carried out, and as a result of that two workers died of a fatal vapour poisoning, two more were hospitalized. Rescue workers pumped water to cool the substance.

The causes of the accident are being investigated.

According to s13.ru website, the victims are two men, born in 1981 and 1988. They were laying tiles next to the place where hot works operation was carried out.

“An emergency situation has taken place today in one of the shops of JSC Grodno Azot at 12.30 p.m. Emergency response groups of the plant and of the city have taken part in bringing it under control. There is no environmental threat or threat to lives of Grodno Zaot workers and population of the city. The exposed to hazardous substances are given medical treatment.

The Investigative Committee of Hrodna region has initiated a criminal case under Article 428 of the Criminal Code (“negligence of duty”) over the death of two persons in Grodno Azot incident, BelaPAN was told by the official representative of the Investigative Committee of Belarus Yuliya Hancharova.
