British Ambassador: We Will Remain European Country And Will Support Democracy In Belarus
MS FIONNA GIBB

Ms Fionna Gibb recorded a video message, in which she spoke on the place of her country in the world after its exit from the EU, and on its future relationships with Belarus.

The diplomat started with reminding of how the British voted on the exit from the EU in the referendum and what this decision means, tut.by. writes.

There has been speculation in the press about the second referendum, a petition to force another referendum, but that is not going to happen. The Government is very clear, the decision has been taken and the UK will leave the European Union.

According to her the time after the referendum was very tumultuous, but now “we need get back to work to put into effect that decision”.

Ms Fionna Gibb assured the audience that the UK is still a European country.

– It will not be a part of the European Union, but it is very much a European country and it will remain so. Intellectually, historically, culturally we are European.

She also added that the United Kingdom was a global player and was intending to continue to be so.

– Outside the EU we will continue to promote security, prosperity not only for the UK, but in the world. And we will continue to promote UK values of democracy, human rights and the international rule spaced system. That will remain the case.

With regard to Belarus, London is “fully committed to its relationships with Belarus.”

– We began this year with the visit of Simon Gass from the Senior membs of Foreign office, which was great to welcome him. And we will build on Simon’s visit in the future by continuing our work, cooperation with Belarus to support economic development and to support the promotion of democratic values and human rights. These are the important areas that we will focus on as we go forward in our relationship with Belarus.

Let us remind that the referendum on whether the UK should leavу the European Union was held on June 23. About 52% of voters supported Brexit. The referendum led to the resignation of the British government. On July 13, the former Home Secretary Theresa May became the Prime Minister of the UK. She appointed one of the leaders of the Brexit campaign Boris Johnson the Foreign Secretary.
