Convicts In Hrodna Prisons To Process Amber For Russia

Prisoners in Belarusian penal facilities will process raw materials for the Russian jewellery industry.

Head of the Department of Corrections of the Interior Ministry of the Republic of Belarus Siarhei Daroshka has said this.

“As for processing amber, this is new experience for us. We did no such things. However, our colleagues in the Russian Federation handle this. In particular, two penal colonies I Kaliningrad conduct rough processing of amber. We studied their experience, it’s not a very complicated production, we can master it here,” — Daroshka has said on air in the “Novosti” program on STV TV-channel.

According to s13.ru, by reference to logistics, one of the penal colonies or prisons located in Hrodna region will start amber processing. This will provide work for 150 people.

In Belarus, they actively use the convicts’ labour. Three manufactures have been organized in penal facilities. They sew clothes; make souvenirs, furniture and even prefabricated houses.

However, prisoners make next to nothing for their work. This is the way the authorities take advantage of the prisoners’ rightlessness, actually impelling them to slavery.
