International Day Of Disappeared: Where Are Zakharanka, Hanchar, Krasouski And Zavadski?

Politicians Yury Zakharanka, Viktar Hanchar, the businessman Anatol Krasouski and the journalist Zmitser Zavadski disappeared under suspicious circumstances in Belarus.

International Day of the Disappeared is on 30 August, every year.

The impulse for the day came from the Latin American Federation of Associations for Relatives of Detained-Disappeared (FEDEFAM) in the 80th. Later this date became international. The problem of missing persons is relevant for Belarus.

On this day the Red Cross reminds that the right of people to know what has happened to their missing relatives – is the one of the key provisions in the international humanitarian law and international human rights law. It applies regardless of when and under what circumstances the person became missing.

An infinite number of people around the world is haunted by the disappearance of their loved ones. The missing are neither alive nor dead for their families. Their mothers and fathers, wives and husbands, relatives and friends can neither mourn the loss, nor rejoice the return of their loved ones.

On this day, measures are taken in many countries to preserve the memory of those whose fate is still unknown.

The number of missing people increases during armed conflicts. There are no wars or armed conflicts in Belarus, but four people – politicians Yury Zakharanka, Viktar Hanchar, businessman Anatol Krasouski and journalist Zmitser Zavadski, – have disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Criminal investigations into their disappearance have repeatedly been suspended and then resumed again. Relatives and friends have already lost hope.

“There is no any development of the situation. So, once in a quarter they inform me on the continuation of the investigative actions, send me a formal reply. I do not believe in any work of investigative bodies, I have absolutely no belief,” – Zinaida Hanchar, the wife of the well-known politician Viktar Hanchar, whi is missing since 1999, says.

Demands to disclose the truth about the kidnapping of these people are included in the resolutions of the UN Commission on Human Rights, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the OSCE.

The mother of the cameraman of Russian ORT TV channel Zmitser Zavadski, whi disappeared in 2000, Volha Zavadskaya also does not believe that there will be any progress in the case of her son:

“I don’t have any hope. Throughout these years, the prosecutor's office does not give a detailed answer to all the questions. They give only some formal runarounds, which state that some investigative activities are carried out; the case is not closed, but suspended. We have never been given an information about what kind of activities were carried out, and to what results they have led.”

In Viktar Hanchar’s family and Zmitser Zavadski’s family sons have grown up and matured without their fathers, in Anatol Krasouski’s family – daughters. The family of the missing former Interior Minister Yury Zakharanka was forced to leave for Germany.
