"Deputy" Marzalyuk And Air Tax

Brand new "people's chosen one" offers to fine for failure to appear in "elections".

On Belarus-1 TV channel Ihar Marzalyuk, a brand new "deputy" from the Mahilyeu region, has voiced the idea that, in his opinion, could save some part of budget funds spent on "elections".

He offers to introduce an administrative liability for failure to appear in "elections". He referred to a "progressive European experience." According to him, there is some financial compensation in a number of European that voters not appeared in elections are subject to pay.

Given the nature of the electoral campaign in Belarus, the proposal of "deputy" Marzalyuk is a cynical one. Here are reasons why.

Parliamentary elections have become so predictable that the independent media and associations have started to organize the voting tote on the eve of the elections. This year results deserve the highest possible praise: for example, Nasha Niva guessed 106 winners of the "parliamentary" race of 110 possible. The newspaper relies on observations of past ten years, which prove that only position not a person is the thing that counts. By the way, they had Marzalyuk in the list.

This predictability has led to the fact that independent experts use words "appointed" or "taken” (to the parliament) rather than "elected".

When the list of future "deputies" can be easily formed a few weeks before the elections, the role of a voter becomes completely formal. Therefore, the reaction of ordinary Belarusians who vote for the future "people's servants" being not interested in their names and functions, as it was, for example, in Karelichy district is not surprising.

Let's remind of the number of early voters - more than 31% - and home voters. In Barysau an independent observer recorded a fantastic ability of a field team; it managed to have 321 votes in 420 minutes. And, according to independent observers, 1000 voters of 1800 registered took part in home voting at one of precincts in Mahilyeu.

Taking into account factors mentioned above, the proposal of "deputy" Marzalyuk looks at least equal to alleged proposal to introduce an air tax.
