“It Is Ordered To Develop A “Perfect Murder” Scheme”

13

In such way the former investigator Aleh Sluchak described the main mission of “death squads”.

After the disappearance of the former Interior Minister of Belarus Yury Zakharanka, the Coordinating Rada of democratic forces of Belarus established a public commission to investigate the circumstances of the abduction of the general. I was offered to head it. The commission includes: Uladzimir Baradach, Valery Kostka and Aleh Bebenin.

The first week of the public investigation found out that Yury Zakharanka was really abducted by a group of 6 unknown people in a crowded place. The prosecutor's office denied that Yury Zakharanka was detained. And then we became scared: the location of the former Minister of Internal Affairs was unknown, and the hope to find the general was fading every day.

Four months later, the vice-speaker of the Supreme Council Viktar Hanchar and his friend the businessman Anatol Krasouski disappeared under the similar circumstances. Only then the prosecutor’s office initiated criminal cases on the facts of kidnapping.

And in summer 2000, in broad daylight, the cameraman of ORT, the Russian TV channel, Zmitser Zavadski was abducted.

We were receiving various information from our sources from the law enforcement agencies, which boiled down to one idea – a special group of law enforcement officers, liquidating political opponents, was acting in Belarus. However, we had no direct proof.

In 2000, my former colleague at the investigative work in the Frunzenski District Prosecutor's Office of Minsk Aleh Sluchak joined my organization.

In January 2001, Sluchak reported, citing a colleague from the Prosecutor's Office, that it was known: who and how had eliminated Zakharanka, Hanchar, Krasouski and Zavadski.

Aleh said that he could not give the name of the investigator, but an anonymous leakage of information on the case was going to happen in March 2001. This was exactly what happened: according to the leaked information, all of those abductions were committed by security officers on the orders of their superiors. The missing politicians were no longer alive.

In May 2001, Aleh Sluchak and the investigating officer Dzmitry Petrushkevich declared their readiness to disclose information on how the political opponents of the authorities are liquidated in Belarus. I knew that voicing of such information threatens their lives and advised them to go to Europe and disclose the information from there.

In June 2001, the world was stirred up by the news that there were “death squads” in the heart of Europe, in Belarus, which task was to liquidate the opponents of the regime.

It seemed that the 1937th year, when the NKVD could shoot people without trial, had irretrievably sunk into oblivion, but we were wrong.

Today, every Belarusian knows about the “death squads” and their victims. Investigation of affairs continues, but there are no results. However, thanks to the boldness and the courage of the lawyers who risked their lives, the world learned the truth about the Belarusian authorities Later, other law enforcement officials will confirm their testimonies, but Sluchak and Petrushkevich were the pioneers. And “loud” disappearances of opposition members returned Belarus back into the captivity of Stalinism.

On behalf of myself and all concerned citizens of Belarus I would like to thank Aleh Sluchak and Dzmitry Petrushkevich for their dedication to the country and people. The time will come when they return to the country and bring to a close the investigation of the high-profile abductions.

Р.S. According to our sources, some high-ranking prosecutor's office officials were supposed to speak in public following the investigator’s report. Unfortunately, they backed out at the last moment...
