Activist Tomas Yakavitski was found with traces of violent death.

Activist of the European Belarus civil campaign Tomas Yakavitski found dead in Mahiliou. He would have had his 50-year anniversary in a month, Radio Svaboda reports.

Relatives found Tomas dead in the morning on 24 September. According to preliminary data, the death was violent. The suspect in the activist’s death has been detained.

Tomas Yakavitski was born in Mahiliou on October 25, 1966. He was one of the pioneers of motor sports in the city.

Tomas lived an ordinary life, helping all those, who needed it. When human rights activist Krystsina Shatsikava was diagnosed an oncological disease, Tomas took care of her until her death. He took her for treatments in his own car.

He was one of the organizers of the fireworks in support of Mahiliou prisoners Andrei Sannikov and Zmitser Bandarenka. He was among the protesters in Independence Square in Minsk on September 19, 2010.

Shortly before his death, Tomas’s business went bankrupt. He was engaged in car repairing. The activist had to sell his possessions to survive.

Tomas Yakavitski’s funeral will be held today. The burial service starts at 12 am. He will be buried at the South-East (“Lausanauskae”) cemetery of the regional center.
