Autoradio Founder And Editor In Chief Yury Bazan Died

During the elections-2010 Autoradio supported Andrei Sannikov’s slogan “It’s Time To Replace Bald Tire!”

On September 24, Autoradio’s founder and chief editor Yury Bazan died at the age of 54, his relatives informed charter97.org.

“He was a true professional in his field, an excellent specialist. He could cheer up everyone, his smile never disappeared. Always glittering, cheerful and confident, our Yury Bazan. We all will miss him. There is no one like him in the world. Till the end of life he will remain in our memory as an example of firmness, fairness, activity and professionalism.” – the letter says.

Autoradio-Minsk is the first radio station in Belarus, which started broadcasting after the Soviet Union collapsed. Since 1992 and up to January 20, 1995, the station broadcast only on the frequency 67.7 FM. In 2001, the parallel frequency 105.1 FM was officially launched.

At the elections-2010 Autoradio supported Andrei Sannikov’s slogan “It’s Time To Replace Bald Tire!”

In 2011, Autoradio was banned. One of the reasons for the broadcast’s termination was the warning issued by the Ministry of Information on 10 January. According to official explanations, Autoradio disseminated information “containing public calls for extremist activity.”

That was how the officials interpreted presidential candidate for election 2010 Andrei Sannikov’s promo phrase that “the fate of the country is not decided in the kitchen, but in the Square.”

Yury Bazan had unsuccessfully tried to save the radio all these 6 years. The decision to close it was challenged in all the instances, but remained in force.

The Charter97.org editorial board expresses its deepest condolences to Yury Bazan’s relatives and friends.
