Leanid Kulakou: Asked Detention But Got Fined
Leanid Kulakou

The activists of “European Belarus” Leanid Kulakou and Maksim Vinyarski fined for banner demanding fair elections.

Zavzdski district court of Minsk fined the activist of “European Belarus” Leanid Kulakou 50 basic units for hanging a banner the day before the “parliamentary elections”. A banner demanding free and fair elections appeared on a crossing over Baikalskaya Street in Minsk on September 3. Police officers detained the activists Leanid Kulakou and Maksim Vinyarski for hanging out the banner. It is noteworthy that, after the report had been drawn up against the activists, they were released from the police department, but later they were arrested again for the same action.

“We had to explain that the report had already been drawn up against us,” – Leanid Kulakou said.

The judge Vera Galaukova judged the activist on September 23.

“The judge – a young woman. I proposed a disqualification and she was very surprised, said that she hadn’t done anything bad to me yet. I explained that I didn’t trust judges in Belarus, because they defend the regime that was stealing our future. Then I asked to be sentenced to detention instead of a fine, if they consider me guilty. I don’t have money to pay fines as there were too many of them before. But she fined me with 50 basic units anyway – it is more than 10 million non-denominated Belarusian rubles. While I don’t have any, even denominated ones,” – Leanid Kulakou said to Radio Svaboda.

According to Kulakou, the judge Alena Nekrasava tried Maksim Vinyarski in absentia in the same court. The activist didn’t appear in the court.

“They said that he was convicted for sure, but they refused to inform me on what fined he was sentenced to,” – Leanid Kulakou said.
