The construction of the Belarusian NPP near the Lithuanian border was one of the main themes of the round table “EU Citizens’ Security And The Future Of Energy.”

Representatives of the Belarusian Green Party and the public association Eco House, handed over to MEPs a resolution demanding to stop the construction of the Astravets NPP and to conduct an independent public investigation of the incidents taken place recently. It is reported by the Belarusian Green Party press service.

On 6-8 September, a series of meetings and events, dedicated to the issue of the Astravets NPP construction, with the participation of the European Parliament and the European Commission delegation, was held in Vilnius. The construction of the Belarusian NPP near the Lithuanian border was one of the main themes of the round table “EU Citizens’ Security And The Future Of Energy.”

Co-chairman of the Greens faction in the European Parliament Rebecca Harms, member of the European defense and security committee Klaus Buchner, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee Tamas Mezerikis, MEP from Lithuania Bronis Rope took part in discussing the problem of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

Harms reported that the issue of nuclear power plant construction in Belarus is now being discussed by an ad hoc working group in the European Parliament, and is under consideration of the European Commission.

We remind that several incidents occurred at the station under construction in Astravets. One of the most high-profile incidents occurred on July 10, when the 330-ton reactor vessel fell from a height of two to four meters during the training installation. After this incident, Lithuania, which had criticized the construction of nuclear power plant near its border, sent another note to Belarus, demanding to submit a report on investigation results. The Lithuanian authorities offered Minsk to establish an international commission of experts to analyze the results of the investigation and to provide recommendations, asked for active EU intervention in the issue of nuclear safety, which is of great importance for the whole region, and appealed to the IAEA leadership to participate in the investigation of that one and other incidents, that had occurred at the station under construction.

Following the decision of the Belarusian side, the reactor vessel will be replaced.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant, which is being built with the participation of Russia near Astravets, 50 kilometers from Vilnius, will consist of two power generating units with total electrical capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. A standard Russian project design of a new generation nuclear power station – the NPP-2006 project – has been selected for its construction. The first unit of the Belarusian NPP is to be put into operation in 2018, the second – in 2020.
