January 23 Alexander Lukashenko expressed his intention to "protect the state secretary of the Russia-Belarus union" Pavel Borodin, who had been captured on US soil upon the initiative of the Swiss procuracy. "As a chair of the Supreme State council of the union state of Russia and Belarus, I am committed to protecting this person," - said the Belarusian president upon his plane`s touchdown in the Moscow airport "Vnukovo-2"

The Supreme court didn`t satisfy the appeal of the lawyer Tatyana Stankevich to revise the criminal case of MP Vladimir Kudinov. The lady confirms that she forwarded her request Jan.3 - on the next day after the introduction of the new Penal Code. Under the amended law Kudinov`s prison term expired. Thus, Tatyana hoped that she`ll manage to have the whole thing revised and Kudinov will be out of jail in a month or two. However, the official response from the Supreme Court makes it clear that she was too optimistic on that.

In October 2000 their salary barely reached one minimum living level ($35). The salary of an average doctor with 1-year working experience equals 27 thousand 360 rubles ($20), which is 77% of the minimum living standard.

CoE Political Committee in Strasbourg discussed January 22 the "Belarusian phenomenon". European parliamentarians studied the outcomes of the former elections into the House of representatives and the possibility of renewing the "special guest" status for the Belarusian parliament, which was suspended after the disbanding of the Supreme Soviet in 1996. It`s likely that on Jan.23 the Political Council will confirm the old position of theirs. For the time being there`s no clear indication of their changing attitude to the problem of non-recognition of the Belarusian lower house. 
Why Lukashenko flies to Moscow 11:02, 23/01/2001

Alexander Lukashenko will visit official Moscow for the second time in last seven days. His visit is marked as being "working" - the Belarusian ruler will be awarded a prize of the International foundation of Slavic Orthodox unity. The award will be handed in to the prize-winner by Patriarch of Moscow and Russia Alexiy-II. Meantime, NTV reports that Lukashenko`s arrival in Moscow has been caused by the recent arrest of the union secretary of state Pavel Borodin. 
Trade union leader arrested in Orsha 11:01, 23/01/2001, "Vesna" HRG

Chair of the Free trade union of businessmen of Orsha Alexander Stolarov was captured February 21 in his hometown. Stolarov was detained during the distribution of a newsletter "For Changes". The arrest was carried out by the law-enforcers, assisted by some plain-clothed guy. They delivered the activist to the police station and interrogated for 45 minutes, after which let him go. Stolarov believes that by doing so the authorities seek to exert pressure on businessmen, who`ve been on a two-week strike since the beginning of the New Year.
