Prominent Belarusian academic tried in Gomel 11:06, 13/02/2001

Trial over the former rector of the Gomel Institute of Medicine, outstanding scientist, who studied the consequences of the Chernobyl blast, Yuri Bandazhevsky, will get started in Gomel on February 13. The professor is indicted for getting a bribe from one of his students. In late 1999 Bandazhevsky spent a few months in jail. Many authoritative human rights and international research organizations spoke in favor of him. The world public believes that the true root-cause for his arrest is the officials` unwillingness to speak the truth about the disastrous results of the Chernobyl tragedy. 
US Congress to consider the issue of physical liquidation of dictators 11:05, 13/02/2001, NTV.ru

US Congress will deliberate on the sensational draft law, legalizing the murder of leaders of foreign states and international criminals. Georgian Republican Robert Bar declared that the US authorities have already attempted to assassinate Libyan president Muamar Kaddafi and Cuban dictator Fidel Kastro but to no avail. Today`s issue of the Russian weekly "Version" reads that the first blacklisted people can well be international terrorist #1 Usama bin Laden, former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic, for whom the States promise the reward of $5mln. and the Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko. 
Police raided Chigir`s flat and garage 11:04, 13/02/2001

The law-enforcers launched searches in the apartments and garage of the three young men, charged with felonies and arrested three days ago: Alexander Chigir, Vassily Bykov and Sergei Kolyada. Their relatives claim that police numerously violated the established procedures during the home searches. For instance, during some of their actions there were no witnesses present. Alexander Chigir`s father, former Belarusian Premier Mikhail Chigir keeps insisting on the political motivation in the arrest of his son and his friends. He and his wife labeled police actions "a political provocation". Ex-Premier noted that the authorities are now striving hard to discredit him as a potential runner at the presidential elections later this year. 
February 14 - trade unions protest 11:03, 13/02/2001

As we reported earlier the authorities forbade the trade unionists to rally in the city. The action will take place tomorrow at 4.30 p.m. at the Bangalor square in Minsk. At 5p.m. the "Youth Front" will carry out its unsanctioned action, entitled "Love, freedom, changes!". 
OSCE Parliamentarians to visit Belarus 11:02, 13/02/2001

Two members of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly`s Ad hoc Working Group on Belarus, Mr. Gert Weisskirchen (MP, Germany) and Mr. Urban Ahlin (MP, Sweden), will visit Minsk on 19-20 February 2001. During their stay, the delegates plan to meet with the representatives of the Belarusian authorities: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Presidential Administration, and the Central Commission for Elections and National Referenda. The delegates will also speak with representatives of the 13th Supreme Soviet and of the recently elected National Assembly, as well as from diplomatic missions, human rights groups, and independent deputies from the National Assembly. 
Police got hold of hackers again 11:01, 13/02/2001

Two computer hackers were detained February 12 by the Minsk law-enforcers. BELTA correspondent was told in the police headquarters that there exist all grounds to suggest that they caught the initiators of a hackers` pyramid, who had been terrorizing a range of German companies, specializing in selling photography and cameras. Approximate damage from their actions constituted somewhat 50 thousand German marks.
