Brest Authorities Ban Distribution of Flyers 11:10, 02/04/2001
Three Brest natives, handing out special issues of "Nasha Svaboda" newspaper, were detained March 30 by the officers of the Leninsky district police department.
Action organizer Sergei Bahun told BelaPAN that a 15-year old Evgeny Pleshko, 17-year old Andrei Homich and himself were distributing free newspaper copies at 2-3 p.m. near the entry to the Brest state university and the local market. All of a sudden they were approached by a few plain-clothed gentlemen and offered a ride to the near-by police office.
After the fellows were delivered to the Leninsky police station, they spoke with its sheriff Mikhail Kregel. The officer orally warned the action initiators. "But this wasn`t a picketing, we distributed a periodical, registered with the State Committee for Press," - objected Bahun. He says that police had been brainwashing the three of them for two hours and afterwards let hem go.
