ZUBR Runs Action of Solidarity with NTV 11:13, 04/04/2001

ZUBR resistance movement, along with the "Charter`97" civil initiative, went for an action of solidarity with the Russian NTV channel, presently under severe state persecution. Over 30 ZUBR and Charter`97 members staged an unsanctioned picketing of the NTV office in Minsk. For half an hour the action participants were hollering "Long Live NTV!" and "Hands off NTV!"

Just like in Belarus, they harass independent media, which dare criticize state policy. To do so the authorities do not scruple to use any means - from political blackmail to economic pressure - almost exact picture of our domestic situation. The unknown damaged a huge stand, erected at the Oktybrskaya square in the memory of the 5th anniversary since the Russia-Belarus merger. Between the words "Belarus" and "Russia" there appeared a 2-meter wide hole. Riot police officer, who was standing on duty at the stand, told BelaPAN correspondent that it wasn`t an act of vandalism, claiming that the hole had been produced by fierce wind blow. A few days before that incident someone burnt down the canvas banner, glorifying the union of the two, which hung over the Masherova prospect bridge - daily route of Lukashenko`s cortege.

Not until the spontaneous strike at the Minsk plant of automatic conveyor-belts, had the plant`s administration managed to find ways to pay the workers their February wages. "Belenergo" concern intends to sell the Berezy electric power station to the RAO "ES" of Russia. Belarus, says the concern`s president Evgeny Mishuk, owes almost 400bln. rubles for the Russian energy supplies - the country is broke and unable to clear that off. Brest regional council composed a list of husbandries, which badly need economic reanimation. The list is made up of a few hundred farms, which ended last year with a negative result. Region`s indebtedness increased more than 4 times and reached 70bln. rubles in the first quarter of the year 2001. The forth part of all Brest collective farms accumulated the debt, exceeding the annual size of production sales. 62% husbandries have to constantly delay salary payments in order to have means to start up the sowing. 
Presidential Scholarship Now Amounts to $30 11:01, 04/04/2001

The National Academy of Belarus announced a 2001 contest for granting 30 presidential scholarships to the Belarusian scholars. Scholarships equal 9 and 7 minimum wages, which is $39,5 and $30,6 accordingly. Presidential scholarships were announced by Lukashenko`s decree of August 4, 1998 "to stimulate social and creative activities of young academics."
