Lukashenko to Cooperate with Dictatorial Congo 11:03, 12/04/2001
Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on maintaining diplomatic relations between Belarus and the Republic of Congo. He hopes it will help further develop bilateral relations in all directions, as well as within the international organizations.
Here`s the brief commentary of the authoritative human rights organization Amnesty International on the situation in Congo: "The Great Lakes area is a place of widespread human rights abuses. Hundreds of peaceful residents were slain by guerillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo."
Official Minsk regards Congo as a potential importer of the Belarusian agricultural machinery, heavy lorries, equipment for ore excavations, technical appliances. Moreover, Lukashenko claims that cooperation with Congo may have a serious influence for the sales of Belarusian commodity in other Central African countries.
