Alexander Solodukha Declines to Agitate for Lukashenko
11:17, 19/04/2001

Pop-singer Alexander Solodukha was quoted as saying that he will not agitate for Lukashenko like the rest of his colleagues: "I`m making conclusions. I can speak aloud many things without fear, some of it I will not say because of my upbringing. But when the majority starts complaining about their lifestyle and the ongoing events in the country, I tell them: look, if you don`t like the state leader elect another instead, you have a chance. Every one of us can affect his own destiny and that of his country. One`s inability to do it testifies to his weakness," - told Solodukha in his interview to radio "Svaboda".

On his return from a concert tour Solodukha will record new Belarusian songs: "This year will be crucial for our country. The year of presidential elections… This fall will be 10th year since the start of my solo career. In other words, I`m a sovereign artist and do not depend on the state. I live in this country, I am Belarusian (and I`m proud of it) but as any other European I have the right for freedom. That`s the reason I`ve never visited any "Dazhinki" festivals. Even when they pleaded with me to sing there I made my best to go somewhere else. I`m watching what`s going on, I`m interested and I pretty much realize what`s going on."

Solodukha became one of the first Belarusian pop singers who clarified his civil position ahead of the presidential marathon. The rest of artistic intelligentsia might still do it in future.

We could foretell that Lukashenko will be upheld by those, who easily survived any political collisions. This is especially true of the high-ranking officials from culture. Moreover, unofficial sources report that the team of Russian pop idols will be headed to Belarus to promote Lukashenko. Solodukha claims that these guys would do anything, provided they get well paid.
