Diplomats Set to Mark Day of Republic with Demarche 11:03, 21/06/2001, Y.S.News
Diplomats from the Baltic states, accredited in Minsk are most likely to overlook the official invitation to visit the military parade on July 3 to commemorate the Republic’s Day. The reason for their possible decision is the following – the parade will be led by deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Ushopchik, who in January 1991 was a commander of the Soviet garrison in Vilnius, where civilian casualties occurred during the seizure of the local TV tower.
Prosecutor general of Lithuania is still willing to interrogate Ushopchik, but he never returns to its former place of service. “Would Belarusian diplomats visit the Vilnius parade, given it was held under the command of, say, Gaulaiter Kube?” – commented one of the Baltic embassies on their refusal to engage in the festivities in honor of the Republic’s Day.
