Another Reporter Summoned for KGB Interrogation 11:04, 26/06/2001
Editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Belarussky Chas” – regular periodical of the Federation of trade unions of Belarus – Alexander Starikevich was summoned on June 25 to the KGB investigation department as witness on the criminal lawsuit of a colleague of his, Belarusian Helsinki Committee member Sergei Anisko, who had previously been employed at the KGB analytical department.
The criminal case was allegedly opened in connection with the material in the “Belarussky Chas”, entitled “The head of state may lose support of the military” and an article in the “Dyen” newspaper “The army of offended is joined by the military”. In these publications the author analyzed moods in the Belarusian troops and political sympathies of the enlisted personnel, who, as claimed by the author, speak critically of the current state policy. On June 20 the apartment, the car and the garage of Anisko were raided.
Interrogation of Alexander Starikevich is scheduled for 10a.m. today. The journalist intends to arrive in KGB in the company of his attorney Garry Pogonailo.
