Chronicles of the Sinking President Or Seven Years Which Rocked Belarus
11:19, 24/07/2001, “Moskovsky Komsomolets”

Seven is a mystical number. Take for example “seven years of abundance and seven years of starvation”, prophesized by Joseph to the Egyptian pharaoh. There are no such prophets in modern-day Belarus and nobody can foretell what will happen to this country in a follow-up to the seven-year rule of Alexander Lukashenko, who swore with his hand on the Constitution back in 1994, to ensure the nation’s prosperity. What did he do in reality? In jubilee years we always look back over the shoulder and eye the way that we passed. The way, which Belarus has been following for the last seven years is pitiful. I’d even call this “epic canvas” “seven years of losses”. For seven years the country has been losing its freedom: freedom of speech, press, conscience, life… For seven years the country has been losing economy, image and prestige. And all these losses are associated with the name of the first ever national president, elected through popular vote, Alexander Lukashenko.
