Helplessness Generates Violence
11:05, 10/08/2001

Recently the law-enforcement structures have unleashed campaign on the intimidation and discrediting the United Civil Party. Its office in Krichev was left desolate. For setting up a regional CCDF they opened legal proceedings against the head of the Soligorsk UCP organization Larisa Nasanovich. Police attacked the headquarters of the UCP youth mobilization campaign. Physical and psychological pressure was exerted on the party activists in Soligorsk, Krichev, Minsk, Grodno, Dzerjinsk, Vitebsk. UCP considers this cleansing to be a deliberate action – the reaction of the authorities to the UCP campaign “Want to know the truth!”.

On TV and radio they broadcast programs targeted at discrediting UCP and its leaders. On August 8 Gomel law-enforcers without a prosecutor’s sanction attempted to penetrate inside the UCP office, apprehending leader of the local UCP branch Vladimir Katsoro, against whom they filed protocol on “impeding police actions”. For some time they laid siege at the office.

“It’s an attempt to forcefully silence those, who demand open answers to the questions: Where is Gonchar? Where is Zakharenko? Where is Krasovsky? Where is Zavadsky? What happened to Karpenko? Why Klimov and Schukin are still in jail? – said in this regard UCP chair Anatoly Lebedko: Helplessness generates violence, powerlessness provokes repression, fear – abundant secretion of adrenalin. Obviously, the mentally sick authorities need hospitalization. State servants, beware and be vigilant! They make you tools of their crimes. What for do you need this?”

UCP is calling upon local authorities and police to show less enthusiasm in the fulfillment of orders and commands, contradicting both common sense and Constitution. “Think! – says Lebedko: It doesn’t hurt to think. Boorishness, lies and violence have no future. One day they will end anyway. May be that day will even be September 9.”
