Wives of Repressed Politicians Meet in Regions 11:16, 14/08/2001

“My main goal is to learn in my lifetime, who executed the order to kill my husband, for the name of the one who ordered it is clear,” – said on August 13 in her address to Grodno public Ludmila Karpenko, wife of the deceased Belarusian politician Gennady Karpenko, who died in mysterious circumstances. Ludmila Karpenko called the death of her husband a “political assassination”.

On August 13 in Minsk and Belynichi police confiscated from members of the United Civil Party over 24 thousand copies of “Narodnaya Volya” special issue, dedicated to the seven-year rule of Lukashenko and his political tyranny. The newspapers were carried around in car trunks. 
Musical Picket in Svetlogorsk 11:14, 14/08/2001, ZUBR

12 activists of resistance movement ZUBR came up to the building of Svetlogorsk KGB in the evening of August 13. They were holding placard with words: “Lukashenko – on pension!” white-red-white flag and were singing Belarusian songs with guitar. At 9 p.m. guys were arrested and taken to police station.

Picket In Valery Schukin Support Outside Zhodino Detention Center 11:10, 14/08/2001

A picket was held on August 13 by the protesters of the Youth Front outside the walls of the Zhodino detention center, where Schukin is serving three-month term. Initially a relay race from Minsk to Zhodino was planned but Minsk executive committee banned it. Then the group of the young picketers arrived to Zhodino by an electric train. 
KGB Is Looking For Authors of Anti-Presidential Slogans 11:09, 14/08/2001

On August 13 the KGB division in the Gomel region searched the private house of the chairman of the Gomel regional “Civil Initiatives” association Viktor Korneenko. 20 men in civilian clothes entered the house. They produced a search warrant, signed by the Gomel region’s Public Prosecutor Oleg Polovinko. As it turned out, the search is motivated by the criminal proceedings instituted by the regional KGB division on charges relating to the anti presidential slogans defiling the city. 
Belarusian TV Accused of Libel Once Again 11:07, 14/08/2001

Member of the United Civil Party from Borisov, Valery Kabak, forwarded a complaint to the human right defending organization “Vyasna” and brought a suit against Belarusian TV and Alexander Zimovsky personally , the presenter of “Resonance” program, on August 13. A similar suit was brought by the United Civil Party and its leader Anatoly Lebegdko. The program “Resonance” aired report as one of the United Civil Party members from Borisov allegedly promised three its Borisov members to assist in obtaining a political refuge in one of the western countries for the reward equal to 500 USD.

Documentary Festival Incurs Problems of Broadcasting 11:05, 14/08/2001

On August 13 there’ll start the festival of documentaries – laureates of the festival “One world”. According to the People in Need expert Vratislav Rzhehak, the films are dedicated to human rights and were shown throughout last year in the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia and Kosovo. Moreover, said Rzhehak, similar action will take place in Armenia, Azerbaijan and other CIS states, where various human rights violations occur. Speaking about the hardships in organizing the movies’ show on the territory of Belarus, Vratislav Rzhehak stressed that “festival organizers never ran similar problems before, which makes Belarus a unique country”.

The registration of presidential candidates took place today at 10a.m. in the Republic’s Palace. They registered four nominees for the high post – unique candidate from the wide civil coalition, leader of Federation of trade unions of Belarus Vladimir Goncharik, the “Regional Belarus” association leader Syamon Domash, Liberal-Democratic Party leader Sergei Gaidukevich and the incumbent Alexander Lukashenko. When the four lucky things were leaving the building they were welcomed at the exit by a hundred folks from democratic forces with flowers in their hands. These came to congratulate Goncharik and Domash with the successfully laid foundation of their campaigns. Alongside with them, there also showed up candidates’ colleagues from the “five team”: Pavel Kozlovsky, Mikhail Chigir, Sergei Kalyakin, accompanied by Mikhail Marinich and Alexander Yaroshuk. 
Registration of Candidates for Presidency Underway in the Republic’s Palace 11:02, 14/08/2001

Registration of candidates for the president will take place today at 10a.m. in the Republic’s Palace. It is expected that immediately after it the registered candidates will be handed in candidates’ certificates. Right now there are four contenders left in the race – unique candidate from the wide public coalition, leader of the Federation of trade unions of Belarus Vladimir Goncharik, leader of the “Regional Belarus” Syamon Domash, chair of the Liberal Democratic Party Sergei Gaidukevich and Alexander Lukashenko. The necessary amount of signatures has been gathered in support of all four nominees. Moreover, the potential candidates submitted their income and property declarations, as well as those of their relatives. Charter’97 press-center will report in an on-line format about the event’s development. 
Victory Formula Brought into Life: Domash and Goncharik Sign an Open Deal 11:01, 14/08/2001

Following time-consuming debates, which lasted for a few hours, with people almost breaking into the building where they held meeting between two potential candidates for the presidency and members of political parties and movements, with ZUBR activists rocking the place with shouts “Unique Candidate!” and “Long Live Belarus!”, the festive ceremony of signing the agreement has finally come to an end. The main result of today was the drawn final decision of the potential candidates for the presidency – Vladimir Goncharik and Syamon Domash – to coordinate their activities, working in one tandem. In the event Goncharik gets registered as candidate, Syamon Domash immediately withdraws his candidature in favor of Goncharik, being guaranteed a Premier’s seat in the aftermath to the victory.
