KGB Is Looking For Authors of Anti-Presidential Slogans 11:09, 14/08/2001
On August 13 the KGB division in the Gomel region searched the private house of the chairman of the Gomel regional “Civil Initiatives” association Viktor Korneenko. 20 men in civilian clothes entered the house. They produced a search warrant, signed by the Gomel region’s Public Prosecutor Oleg Polovinko. As it turned out, the search is motivated by the criminal proceedings instituted by the regional KGB division on charges relating to the anti presidential slogans defiling the city.
The action was brought on August 9 according to article 341 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. Two members of the “Civil Initiatives” and a representative of the Zheleznodorozhny district Administration were present by the search. KGB officers made everybody else leave the house.
According to BelaPAN, the members of the “Civil Initiatives” association, as well as the local, regional and city organizations of the United Civil Party, gathered at the house of Viktor Korneenko, as he is the chairman of its regional branch. Many “Civil Initiatives” members participate in the initiative group of Syamon Domash, a candidate for president. As the members of the organization stress, KGB officers acted illegally, while the owner of the house, Viktor Korneenko, left for Minsk on August 13.
