Belarus Denies Entry Visas to ODIHR Observers 11:09, 16/08/2001
None of the observers of the Warsaw-based OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) managed to receive a Belarusian entry visa on August 15, according to an ODIHR representative.
On August 15, after a delay of more than a month, the Belarusian government sent an official invitation to the ODIHR to monitor the country’s September presidential election. On receiving the invitation in Warsaw at about noon, local time, the ODIHR observers immediately applied to the Belarusian embassy in Poland for entry visas. But embassy officials told them that "it is impossible to do this today."
On the morning of August 16, a representative of the Belarusian embassy in Warsaw refused to give any explanations to a BelaPAN correspondent, saying that he needed to see the journalist personally. Pavel Latushko, spokesman for the Belarusian foreign ministry, did not comment on the situation to BelaPAN either. He said that he would answer the question at the briefing that was to be held later in the day.
