Police Check-Up At “Aslona” Human Rights Center
11:17, 16/08/2001

Agents of the police department for economic crimes (OBEP) commenced to explore the activities of the “Aslona” human rights center of Volkovysk. August 16 morning the HR group’s office was visited by local police chief Evgeny Chernyavsky and his helper Vitaly Boltrukevich. BelaPAN was told by “Aslona’s” head of the board Nikolai Kovalchuk that the law-enforcers explained their sudden raid by cal the examination into whether or not they possess proper documentation for their technical equipment.

OBEP cops also claimed that the checking of the documents is linked to the burglaries in private offices, which are commonplace these days. Nikolai Kovalchuk called these justifications “groundless”. He figures that the real reason for the police visit was neutralization of the presidential agitation campaign and prevention of materials’ distribution at any cost. The examination lasted for an hour and the law-enforcers promised Kovalchuk that more actions would be undertaken against his center in future.
