“The government of Belarus denounces the statements, voiced last week by the US State Department and certain European institutions regarding the Belarusian authorities’ intentions to fabricate the results of the presidential elections,” – runs the press-release of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry circulated on Thursday: “Any interference into the interior political situation of Belarus, - further reads the statement: during the period of presidential election campaign will be treated as direct interference into the affairs of a sovereign state with all the ensuing consequences.”
The document also states that the authorities “question the objectivity of the positions, held by the ODIHR OSCE monitoring mission in relation to the presidential elections in Belarus.” The regime deplores ODIHR’s decision to ignore the parliamentary ballot in Belarus in 2000. “Nonetheless, the Bureau all the same drew a highly controversial conclusion on non-recognition of the elections outcomes. Therefore, - continues the statement: there has been set up a dangerous precedent for OSCE, when its entitled institution, refraining from monitoring the elections, takes upon itself the responsibility to comment on their results.”
