Administration Mouthpiece Engages in Opposition Mobilization Campaign 11:05, 17/08/2001
The biggest official newspaper of Belarus “Sovetskaya Belorussiya”, published by the presidential Administration, is coming up with publicity images, calling on readers to vote for the new government. Under the heading “Time of choice” they run two snapshots: today’s beggar, suffering from poverty in black and white colors, and the same person on a colored photo, representing the new lifestyle of Belarus. The readers are offered to make their choice between old and new.
However, the images appeared in “SB” way too late. The independent press has been publishing them with high periodicity since May. Even now they print portraits of prominent Belarusians who urge everyone to cast their votes for new life on Sept.9. Go see our pictures in “Time to choose!” section.
Apparently, even the official newsmakers realized that in the fall the nation would choose itself a different leader, so they are trying to adjust now.
