Tax Inspection Steps Up Total Check-Up of Independent Observers’ Equipment 11:10, 17/08/2001
The tax inspection of the Frunzensky district of Minsk launched an investigation into the economic activities of the Central coordination council for elections monitoring, that is part of the initiative “Independent Observation”. “IO”, as is known, intends to conduct a parallel count of votes, cast during the fall presidential ballot. This initiative provoked an utterly negative reaction from the authorities – yesterday the Ministry of Justice labeled it “illegal”. Today we learnt that as a result of the examination the tax inspection would confiscate part of the equipment that belongs to the “IO”.
The inspectors cite the necessity to check whether the organization is engaged in any financial activity. When told that no economic activities are being done by them, the tax collectors said that they would all the same browse through the documents for the equipment, installed in the Central Coordination Council. During the inspection it turned out that they have no proper documentation for PCs, leased to them by the Belarusian Helsinki Committee.
So now they are going to confiscate the equipment without any further clarification and paying no heed to the claims that all the documents are at the BHC.
