“Reporters Without Frontiers” Label Lukashenko “Foe of Internet” 11:20, 20/08/2001
Belarusian authorities are readying to step up a state standard, envisaging mandatory certification for all participants of information technologies market. As a result, the French human rights organization “Reporters without frontiers” in their daily rapport “Internet enemies” paid particular attention to “Lukashenko’s regime in Internet”.
“Seeking further Internet development and publishing a concomitant program, the totalitarian regime of president Alexander Lukashenko launched a system of monitoring of Internet back in the year 1992,” – reads the report.
“Reporters without frontiers” also claim that opposition sites exist under constant fear that someone’s watching over them. According to the journalist of the Belarusian branch of “Free Europe”, the “secret services are keeping track of what’s happening on-line, but dare not interfere, for they fear an open scandal.” Belarusian human rights defenders also suspect that the governmental structures embark on the system of providers’ modem surveillance.
