A group of police officers led by lieutenant-colonel Alyonushkin, deputy chief of the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Mogilev city executive committee for public order, and lieutenant-colonel Yermakov, deputy chief of a district police department, attempted to break into the regional campaign headquarters of presidential candidate Vladimir Goncharik in Mogilev at 8 p.m. on August 25.
The visitors did not produce any documents and explained that they just wanted to "take a look at the office," Mr. Goncharik’s press-center reported.
The duty officer at the Mogilev Prosecutor’s Office, whom representatives of the headquarters asked for explanations, declined to answer questions, suggesting ringing back on Sunday.
At approximately 10 p.m., about 30 campaign staff amassed near the headquarters. Police made another attempt to get in an hour after. The building was cordoned off by police officers. Despite the watchman’s protests, they entered the building, which also houses the regional office of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, but failed to penetrate into the campaign headquarters. The police detained its head, Ivan Solonovich, inside the building and talked to him for several hours.
