Stockholm Manifestation For Free and Fair Poll in Belarus 11:09, 27/08/2001
Mr. Urban Ahlin, MP and deputy Secretary General of the Swedish Social Democratic Party opened a manifestation at Norrmalmstorg in central Stockholm today and urged Lukashenko to arrange a free and fair election in September. Hundred activists were gathered and released 100 balloons (white and red) to the sky with the same message attached to Lukashenko.
Urban also spoke about the necessity to investigate and reveal the truth about the missing persons from the opposition.
Irina Krasovskaya, wife of the businessman Anatoly Krasovsky and Svetlana Zavadskaya, wife of the cameraman of the Belarusian press-service of the Russian ORT, also participated in the manifestation. They both spoke to the crowd.
This was the first out of three demonstrations for a free and democratic Belarus. Next events will be on the two following Saturdays. High-ranking politicians from all parties in the Swedish Parliament will join the protests.
