CEC Threatens to Cancel Goncharik Registration As Candidate :: Charter'97 :: News

Central Election Commission aired a warning towards the election headquarters of the single democratic candidate Vladimir Goncharik. On August 27 at the sitting of the CEC the materials asserting the infringements of law by Goncharik’s team were examined. As a proof the facts of mass free distribution of independent newspapers “Nasha Svaboda”, “Rabochy”, “Belarusskaya Molodezhnaya”, “Den”. The free distribution of the independent press is viewed by CEC as voter’s bribing.

CEC also paid attention to the agitation leaflets without imprint, the leaflets of the unregistered movement “For New Belarus”, that contain a call to vote for the single democratic candidate. The CEC members have confined themselves to the recommendation to Goncharik’s election headquarters to “follow the Electoral Code rigorously”. According to CEC chairwoman Lidia Ermoshina, it is a “preventive” measure, and if the situation would not improve, CEC would make an official warning. And a second warning could be, as Ermoshina said, a reason for annulment of Vladimir Goncharik’s registration as a candidate for presidential position.
