GONCHAR AND KRASOVSKY BODIES` SEARCH PROVED AUTHORITIES` INVOLVEMENT 11:16, 28/08/2001

The reporters of Russian TV channels came back today from the hypothetical burial place of Jeep with bodies of Viktor Gonchar and Anatoly Krasovsky. The place is situated by the military garrison in Begoml.But as the journalists say themselves, the visit to the hypothetical place of burying of politicians vanished two years ago left more questions than answers. The reason for this is the fact that a team of the Interior Ministry officers with the Minister Vladimir Naumov as a commander went to search the remains, although Naumov himself is a suspect in this case and should not carry out this investigation. That is why the actions of the Minister and his officers were viewed with, gently speaking, mistrust. Naumov even did not make attempts to dispel doubts of Russian reporters.For example, technical characteristics of the metal detector are unknown and so the reading is not reliable. Secondly, police operatives have never taken samples of turf from the place of suspected burial of opposition members. 
Most Minskers Readying to Vote for Vladimir Goncharik 11:15, 28/08/2001

38% of Minsk voters intend to cast their votes for Vladimir Goncharik, 32% - for Alexander Lukashenko and 8% - for Sergei Gaidukevich. Such were the data received during the opinion poll, conducted August 23-26 by BelaPAN research laboratory Zerkalo. They surveyed 500 residents of Minsk, aged 18 and over. 12% of Minskers may vote against all candidates, while 10% couldn’t say for sure. 
Robert Filding’s Deportation – Another Government’s Psychosis 11:14, 28/08/2001

Free trade union of Belarus protests the exile of the US national Robert Filding and considers this act as a “destructive one, aimed at annihilating democratic freedoms”. “We believe that Filding’s banishment is the result of the government’s paranoia over alleged interference into the internal states of the country,” – reads the statement of the trade union. Its authors claim that Filding has never electioneered neither for nor against any of the candidates. Robert Filding arrived in Belarus as a consultant upon FTU’s invitation. He was supposed to consult FTU members on issues of their organization’s development and contribution to the democratic polling in Belarus. 
State News Agents Network Declines to Sell Free Press 11:13, 28/08/2001

Without explaining the motives, on August 17 in breach of the accord signed in Glubokoye local state news agent’s refused to sell via their network the town’s independent paper “Volnaye Glubokoe”. Previously another edition, registered with the State Committee for Press, was denied permit for publishing services in the “Pobeda” press. Novopolotsk press doesn’t wish to print it likewise.

Eighty-one percent of the 500 Minsk-based voters polled by BelaPAN from August 23 to 26 said they planned to vote in Belarus, presidential elections in September as compared to 79 percent in a similar August 14-17 poll. 
US National Stands Justice in Minsk 11:11, 28/08/2001

Central district court of Minsk opened lawsuit against US citizen Charles Daniel Periello, suspected of storing and selling drugs, as well as organizing a drug den, reports Interfax. Director of the American representation of Accels was captured by KGB officers on June 21. During the raid in his apartment police came across marihuana. Periello only acceded to part of the accusations, brought against him. He confessed that he indeed purchased, stored and used drugs. 
Government Confirms That Gennady Uglyanitsa Works for KGB 11:10, 28/08/2001

KGB confirmed that Gennady Uglyanitsa, who voiced on video sensational testimony, implicating Belarusian authorities in assassinations, is indeed an agent of the department for the protection of constitutional order and organized criminality fighting of the Minsk KGB. At the moment KGB is after Uglyanitsa, who dared state the involvement of Belarusian authorities in kidnapping Viktor Gonchar and Anatoly Krasovsky. As you know, Uglyanitsa detailed the circumstances of abduction, murder and burial of the two opposition people. Gennady Uglyanitsa didn’t appear at work neither on August 27 nor on the 28th. His parents know nothing about his whereabouts. 
KGB AND “KRAI” VERSUS DEATH SQUADS 11:08, 28/08/2001

Charter’97 press-center learnt about the details of two individuals, who disseminated the video with their sensational testimony yesterday among all Russian channels, accredited in Belarus, independent newspapers and radio-stations. One of them is Gennady Uglyanitsa, who called himself a staffer of the KGB department for constitutional order protection and terrorism fighting is indeed working for KGB Minsk region. Although the center for information and public relations of Belarusian KGB claims that Uglyanitsa isn’t a KGB employee at all, former CIPR KGB recognized his colleague. We also learnt that Gennady Uglyanitsa is a son-in-law of the prominent Belarusian academician Rodim Goretsky. Uglyanitsa has a wife and two kids living in Minsk, who temporarily moved to Goretsky. The second person was Andrei Zhernosek. BelaPAN journalist Gennady Barbarich recognized him as former activist of the Youth Front, present activist of the sports-patriotic organization “Krai”. As you remember, on the video Andrei Zhernosek not even once called himself a KGB agent, having only uttered his name. According to the preliminary information he also has a wife and little kids, living in Belarus. 
Authorities Cover Up Their Tracks. Naumov Visited Begoml Base Overnight 11:07, 28/08/2001

A group of sappers, headed by the Interior Minister Vladimir Naumov, set off yesterday night to the military compound, located near Begoml, where, according to the information supplied by SOBR fighter Alexander Metelsky, KGB agent Gennady Uglyanitsa and “Krai” activist Andrei Zhernosek the murderers dug the Jeep with corpses of Viktor Gonchar an Anatoly Krasovsky, reports Interfax. Same day some Russian TV groups, accredited in Belarus, also headed for Begoml. However, they said, due to the darkness they couldn’t find anything. This morning same TV people left for Begoml again, this time in the company of police. What did Vladimir Naumov, suspected of implication in killings, do at the supposed place of Gonchar’s and Krasovsky’s burial, remains unknown. It is no less astonishing that he had taken with him sappers, rather than police operatives. 
Belarus Election: Observer Chief Cancels Visit Citing Visa Denials 11:06, 28/08/2001

WARSAW, 27 August 2001 (OSCE) -- Citing government obstruction, the Director of Europe`s leading election observation agency today cancelled a planned two-day visit to oversee OSCE preparations for the observation of the upcoming presidential election in Belarus. Ambassador Gerard Stoudmann, Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), was to have led a working team to Minsk today. The trip was cancelled when two key aides – half of the traveling party – were refused visas.

Vladimir Goncharik to Meet Minskers on Sept.2 11:04, 28/08/2001

Unique candidate from broad civil coalition Vladimir Goncharik plans to hold on September 2 at 12-3p.m. a meeting with Minsk voters on the Oktyabrsky square near the Republic’s Palace of Trade Unions Culture. Such was the will of the Minsk residents. The approximate number of visitors is estimated at 1 thousand people. With a request to help in arranging the event and informing the citizens about it via mass media sources, the presidential candidate addressed the Minsk city territorial election commission and Minsk city executive council.

Ahead of the upcoming elections in Belarus, Amnesty-VU has taken the opportunity to ask new students at the Free University to express solidarity with democratic forces in Belarus. Amnesty-VU is the studentgroup of Amnesty International, based on the Free University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The new students were photographed with a sign, saying "Free elections in Belarus", thus expressing their concerns about the disputed elections in Belarus. With this initiative the university freshmen want to contribute to fair and free elections on the 9th of September in Belarus.

Minsk mayor Mikhail Pavlov ruled to cease the free sale of tickets for the World Cup-2002 qualifier between the national squads of Belarus and Ukraine, to take place September 1 at “Dynamo” stadium. Officially the authorities explain their decision by numerous requests from groups of workers, who are dying to watch the Slav derby. That is why, they say, the tickets will be distributed between state enterprises. However, in reality this has the political aspect to it.
