State News Agents Network Declines to Sell Free Press 11:13, 28/08/2001
Without explaining the motives, on August 17 in breach of the accord signed in Glubokoye local state news agent’s refused to sell via their network the town’s independent paper “Volnaye Glubokoe”. Previously another edition, registered with the State Committee for Press, was denied permit for publishing services in the “Pobeda” press. Novopolotsk press doesn’t wish to print it likewise.
“Vitebsk courier” notes that after “Volnaye Glubokoye” switched to the weekly print run with a colored attachment, it attracted plenty of readers. Meantime, Saturday issues of “Sovietskaya Belorussiya” and other state newspapers’ sales are in decline. That could be the reason why local authorities decided to throw the paper out of circulation. However, that profited the paper, for now that the activists distribute it through their own channels twice as many readers get to it.
