Robert Filding’s Deportation – Another Government’s Psychosis
11:14, 28/08/2001

Free trade union of Belarus protests the exile of the US national Robert Filding and considers this act as a “destructive one, aimed at annihilating democratic freedoms”. “We believe that Filding’s banishment is the result of the government’s paranoia over alleged interference into the internal states of the country,” – reads the statement of the trade union. Its authors claim that Filding has never electioneered neither for nor against any of the candidates. Robert Filding arrived in Belarus as a consultant upon FTU’s invitation. He was supposed to consult FTU members on issues of their organization’s development and contribution to the democratic polling in Belarus.

Moreover, runs the statement, “in light of insolent interference of other foreigners (like Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who was given air on BT) harsh measures undertaken by the authorities prove the anti-democratic nature of their election campaign.”

As you remember, Robert Filding, representative of the Center of solidarity of the American labor federation – the Congress of industrial trade unions, had been banished from Belarus on August 25 on charges of illicit activities on the territory of Belarus. According to the KGB press-release, he acted in capacity of “a coordinator over mobilizing opposition forces for the unconstitutional overthrow of the incumbent” and urged everyone at the trade union seminar in Grodno to vote for Vladimir Goncharik.
