"KRAI" About Scandalous Statement By Zhernosek and Uglyanitsa 11:15, 31/08/2001

In its latest statement the sports-patriotic organization KRAI reported that the staffer of the Belarusian KGB Gennady Uglyanitsa helped KRAI to investigate into “loud cases”. Following we offer an interview by one of the KRAI members Evgeny Sadovsky.

Independent “Predprinimatelskaya Gazeta” (Business newspaper) saw light today with blank gaps. The pressure against the newspaper was exerted by deputy head of the State Committee for Press Vladimir Glushakov, whom “Magic’s” head Yuri Budko had to appoint the press’s acting director in order to lift the blockade, imposed on “Magic”. After that move the printing process resumed but, due to Glushakov’s harsh censorship, contradicting art.33 of the Constitution, which bars the preliminary censorship, “Rabochy” newspaper ran into trouble, as well – the paper was arrested on August 28. Right now we learned of another victim – “Predprinimatelskaya Gazeta”, two materials of which were forbidden. 
“Sovetskaya Belorussia” Cuts Down Single Candidate’s Platform 11:12, 31/08/2001

The platform of Vladimir Goncharik, the single candidate of the united civil coalition, was published on August 31 in the newspapers “Sovetskaya Belorussia” and “Zvyazda” without additions proposed by the candidate. As it is known, the platform of candidate Lukashenko, that had been published before in the same state newspapers, had exceeded the dimensions determined by the Central Electoral Commission. In this connection CEC ruled to give the opportunity to make their programs as long as Lukashenko’s. 
Observers Threatened with No Access to Precinct Electoral Commissions on Voting Day 11:11, 31/08/2001

Observers report to the Belarusian Helsinki Committee of warnings, voiced by the territorial commissions, which allegedly threaten to keep them away from the polling stations on the polling day. For instance, head of the Pink town commission Leontiy Lemeshevsky told observer Vedrov that he would be denied access to the poll, as far as “there’ll be no session as such, while the commission will be doing technical work – gathering information from other stations”.
Ministry of Justice Set to Liquidate “Vesna” Human Rights Center 11:10, 31/08/2001

The Ministry of Justice is discussing the issue over the liquidation of the “Vesna” human rights center, reads the Ministry’s statement. The statement also implies that “Vasna” has been twice reprimanded for violation of its statutory activities and concomitant legislation on public associations. 
KGB Institutes Legal Action Over Uglyanitsa’s Disappearance 11:09, 31/08/2001

Belarusian KGB will launch criminal action over the disappearance of its staffer Gennady Uglyanitsa’s recent disappearance, reports Interfax. KGB officials claim that Gennady Uglyanitsa is a so-called “secret-carrier”, as far as he enjoys access to top secret and state secret data.

As is known they exhumed nothing at the Begoml site, lately visited by Interior Minister Naumov himself. The whole action, says ex-chief of the confinement center #1 colonel Oleg Alkaev has been perfectly pre-arranged and demonstrated: “I was stricken by Naumov’s reactive readiness to ostensibly visit the place of occurrence. As if he was dying to go there. The uniformed people who headed for Begoml had no doubts that there was nothing in that pit. And some of them surely know where they should better dig… The crime scheme, laid out by Uglyanitsa and Zhernosek is, in principle, close to reality. And it needs urgent verification.”
Awards of Dmitry Zavadsky Handed in Minsk 11:07, 31/08/2001

Cameramen of leading Russian Minsk-based TV channels were awarded diplomas “For professional courage and contribution to the freedom of speech”. Awards were established by the ORT channel and Belarusian Association of journalists in memory of the disappeared in July last year ORT cameraman Dmitry Zavadsky. Among the prizewinners are cameramen of leading Russian channels ORT, RTR, NTV and TV-6, as well as Reuter agency. 
KRAI Claims Uglyanitsa Worked for Them 11:06, 31/08/2001

Statement of the sports-patriotic organization KRAI was published on this organization’s site www.spa-kraj.org in Belarusian. The organization claims that one of its leaders Andrei Zhernosek has nothing to do with the Belarusian KGB, whereas the real KGB officer Gennady Uglyanitsa has been lately assisting KRAI. KRAI also states that they’ve launched their own investigation into the loud cases, finding track of the true perpetrators of the killings and the place of victims’ burial near Begoml. The authors of the statement add that the appearance of the video with the testimony is no provocation, concocted by special services. Following read the text of the statement:

Lieutenant-colonel Vadim Malashenko, serving in the interior forces unit, led by Dmitry Pavlichenko, refused to organize a meeting of the radio correspondent with Pavlichenko and his subordinates. However, he did admit that lieutenant Koklin, who had been reportedly in charge of digging the Jeep of Krasovsky in the pit, still serves at the base near Begoml.

New Belarusian ambassador in Yugoslavia Vladimir Matskevich handed in his credentials to the Yugoslav president Voislav Kostunica. Interestingly, Matskevich is a former KGB chief of Belarus, his name being closely related to the loud disappearances. Many tend to think that he was dismissed from post in retaliation to his attempts to investigate in tandem with former prosecutor general Bozhelko, into the true perpetrators of abductions and murders.

On September 1 the Minsk “Dynamo” stadium will host a World Cup qualifier between Belarus and Ukraine national squads. The game will be most certainly attended by Alexander Lukashenko. Remarkably, the tickets for the derby have been sold out long time ago. The stadium has the capacity to accommodate 40thousand400 visitors. Minsk city hall reports that 22 thousand tickets were for sale. Around 1,5 thousand Ukrainian fans are due to arrive before the match. 9 thousand tickets were passed around the administrations of all districts of the capital and some were freely handed out to the state employees. Police, which usually books some 2,5 thousand tickets, this time ordered 4 thousand. The sector in front of Lukashenko’s tribune will be totally given over to BPSM members, who will form the support group of the incumbent.
