OSCE Chairman Called Authorities Upon Equal Conditions For Presidential Candidates 11:13, 04/09/2001
The Chairman-in -Office of the OSCE, the head of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mircea Geoana called upon Belarusian authorities to guarantee the fair and equal conditions for all candidates for presidency in the forthcoming election on September 9. This is stated in the statement of Mr. Geoana, published on Tuesday by the Secretariat of OSCE in Vienna. According to the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, the community of all the OSCE members is to observe the election with intent attention.
He expressed hope that the election in Belarus would be carried out in compliance with the laws of the country and OSCE standards, including the smooth-running work of OSCE mission observing elections.
Mircea Geoana urged the Belarusian executive authorities not to interfere with the work of the Central Election Commission and the local observers.
The Chairman-in -Office states with regret that circumstances do not allow him arrive in Belarus in person, but he hopes for the new positive phase in Belarus’ development, which could lead the country to democracy, rule of law and civil society formation.
