Belarus to Transform into a Transit Adjunct
11:01, 06/09/2001

Should Alexander Lukashenko retain power, Belarus will turn into a transit colony of the West for the transportation of goods eastwards and the transportation colony of the East to deliver commodity westward, says former Belarusian ambassador in Latvia, Estonia and Finland, former nominee for the president Mikhail Marinich, whose article was published in Sept. 5 issue of the “Belorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta”.

“Given the incumbent manages through falsifications to hold grip on power, then for several months or even a year there’ll continue the impoverishment of the nation, stoppage of plants, bankruptcy of collective farms, after which the country will become a transit territory,” – writes Marinich.

The former ambassador deems that “the institute of the president turned into the center, where huge uncontrolled power is accumulated. Thus, it represents a constant source of political instability and threat to the citizens’ security”. Marinich underscores that in 1994, when a deputy of the 12th Supreme Soviet, he protested against the introduction of the president’s post in Belarus.

The author calls on everyone to vote for Vladimir Goncharik in order to “prevent this disaster and spare the country from extinction.” “We have a historical chance to change our lives on our own,” – supposes Marinich.
