Official Moscow Isn’t Supportive of Lukashenko 11:12, 06/09/2001
The self-planned visit of the Udmurtiya governor of Russia Mr.Volkov to Belarus won’t take place until after the ballot. According to the Moscow media, the Kremlin grew particularly displeased with Volkov’s initiative to go and support Lukashenko. So the governor, who depends on his Moscow chefs, was ordered to delay his trip.
At the moment only politicians of leftist orientation or “second echelon” people journey to Belarus. They are more or less independent in their activity – such people as Luzhkov or Primakov. The most noticeable figure of them is Duma Vice-Speaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky, whose visit hardly added any points to Lukashenko’s rating anyway. Kremlin still denies support to Lukashenko, awaiting the results of the Sunday poll.
