Russian Airborne Orchestra Agitates for Lukashenko 11:12, 07/09/2001
Another case of Russian citizens’ interference into the pre-election campaign in Belarus was recorded in Molodechno. September 1, 2001 the “Molodechanskaya Gazeta” published an article “Blue berets are for us”. The content of the article tells that the “Blue Berets” musical orchestra from the Russian Defense Ministry during its Belarusian tours electioneered for Lukashenko. Same paper writes that all expenses on the dwelling of Russian military musicians on the territory of Belarus have been covered by the Belarusian railroad company.
However, the Electoral Law (art.45/7) bars foreign citizens from engaging in pre-election agitation. For this reason Valentina Polevikova – head of Vladimir Goncharik’s election office – forwarded to the Belarusian procuracy a statement, in which she insisted that they warn the “Blue Berets” crew members about the inadmissibility of holding concerts in support of Alexander Lukashenko.
By the way, Vladimir Goncharik’s headquarters informed the state procuracy of all cases of law violations during the election campaign but to no avail.
