Viktor Gonchar’s Birthday Celebrated at Presidential Residence
11:15, 07/09/2001

Today at 12 sharp, on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the 13th Supreme Soviet Vice-Speaker Viktor Gonchar, his friends and colleagues, wives of the political victims and simply the people who care assembled at the president’s residence. The people formed a live line opposite Lukashenko’s residence, raising up portraits of missing Viktor Gonchar, Anatoly Krasovsky, Yuri Zakharenko, Dmitry Zavadsky, deceased under mysterious circumstances Anatoly Maisenya and Gennady Karpenko, political prisoners Andrei Klimov and Valery Schukin. The “Chain of those who care” also attracted mothers of soldiers, who perished in the Belarusian army during peaceful time.

One of the action participants held up a portrait of the young UCP lady from Rechitsa Natalya Brel, who spent by now three days in jail for the distribution of flyers, calling on the populace to bring birthday presents to Lukashenko.

The law-enforcers, who were in abundance there, didn’t step up any counter-measures. Numerous plain-clothed agents, who cordoned off the place, flooded the underpasses, adjacent to the residence. According to some, this can be explained by the fact that the action coincided in time with Alexander Lukashenko’s visit to the National Bank. The protest attracted great number of journalists from various countries of the globe, who came to Minsk to cover the course of the presidential elections.
