Students Made to Vote for Lukashenko 11:17, 07/09/2001
Leadership of some Belarusian universities told the professors that they got to ensure the turnout of all students at the presidential elections. They added that the students must necessarily vote ahead of schedule and for the incumbent. Rector of the Vitebsk state university Rusetsky told the university staffers that the students must be spared Saturday classes and instead be sent to the polling stations.
The rector also explained that the students have to vote for Lukashenko and for his “efforts, directed at the development of the Belarusian society without shocking turbulences, for his care of the youth’s problems, those of national culture, science and art.” Journalists say that something of a similar kind happened in the Mogilev state university, whose rector is Alexander Lukashenko’s proxy.
