Independent Journalist Beaten Up In Schklov 11:09, 24/09/2001
An editor of the independent newspaper “Schklouskiya Naviny” Alexander Scherbak was beaten by two unknown men in the evening of September 22. Two powerfully built guys in black leather jackets wordlessly beaten up an editor and then left without a word and without taking any of his possessions. They beat him so cruelly that he lost consciousness for some time. It is worth saying that a criminal case is brought up against Alexander Scherbak on the eve of presidential election. He is accused of anti-governmental actions together with ZUBR activists. The local police officers searched his flat recently and confiscated all the equipment of the editorial office.
The biased attitude of the authorities in the persecution of the newspaper and the journalist is obvious. So Scherbak has no illusions about the help of the law enforcement agencies. He turned to the police for help, “Nasha Svaboda” reports, but the Schklov police could only return the newspaper’s editor his broken glasses…
