PACE: Belarus Elections Fail to Meet International Standards 11:17, 24/09/2001
It is said in the report of the delegation of the European Council’s Parliamentary Assembly, that carried out monitoring of presidential election campaign in Belarus. This report was presented on September 24 by Stefan Goris at the sitting of the Liberal group of the Parliamentary Assembly. The sitting took place in the framework of the PACE session that has started today. It is expected that the report on the election campaign in Belarus will be presented ay the Plenary session of the PACE. You must remember that in 1997 the “specially invited” status of Belarus in PACE was suspended. In this connection the 13th Supreme Soviet delegation and the delegation of the “national assembly” are not taking part in the PACE Plenary Sessions, but can communicate with the European parliamentarians in the lobby, as well as attend sittings of political groups and sections. The question of the resuming the special guest status for Belarus will not be discussed at the autumn session.
